A little green on the desk, without the work: set the light, let the feeder run, change the filter once in a year or two, and even a beginner can keep an underwater forest that looks like the pictures. In the year-end livestreams the small smart tank is what younger buyers want. The comments say it is kind to beginners, and a way to come down after work.
Once the big electronics firms came in, the old label — money and spare time — stopped fitting. Guangzhou’s hardware is rewriting the hobby into something that sits on a desk, in a hallway, in a rented room. A new scene of buying, built around what younger people want, is opening quietly in the city.
“A fish moving at its own pace can settle a restless mind.” Luo Liming, president of the Guangdong Aquarium Association, puts his finger on it. On a younger buyer’s list, the value is the feeling. No large room, no high cost: a fish, a handful of sand, a few plants, and there is a corner that belongs to you. The step from keeping a fish alive to keeping a view is a wish for less burden and more ease.
“People used to think ornamental fish belonged to the rich. Government and companies have both spread the hobby, and the buyers are clearly younger, in more kinds of rooms.” Lin Shaoyuan, who has been in the trade nearly twenty years at Guangzhou Yifang Aquarium Equipment, says younger buyers care about the experience, the look, and whether it works. “They are not only buying a tank. They are buying an atmosphere, and a way of living.”
A few fish move through moss. Driftwood draws a wilder line. As the light changes, the desk holds a small forest that can travel. Younger people buy it, and they show it. On Xiaohongshu a plain post of a tank can pass ten thousand likes, and the line “now there is one more person staring into a tank” is widely recognised. On Douyin the topic of ornamental fish is near 40 billion plays, and the fish-keeping diary has passed 60 billion.
The change in what people buy has forced the industry to rebuild its logic. The old time, when having stock was enough, is over. Ready to set up, smart at one touch, and good-looking: that is the standard younger buyers prefer. Guangzhou’s industry had already seen it, and answered with new technique and a new scene.
“Younger people hate fuss and love a good look. A lot of so-called smart tanks only connect to the network, and skip the filter that actually keeps the water alive. Beginners kill the fish, and then they quit.” Netlea, in Nansha, has been going for twenty years and is one of the leading firms. Zhao Yanli, its marketing manager, says the small tank has become the household favourite, and the market is wide. “The easy mode they want is not a fake intelligence that gives up a stable ecology.” Netlea cut the controls and added the professional work: a small smart tank that is simple to run and solid underneath, with filter, heater, and light built in, and a stronger biological filter so the water stays clear and the fish stay alive. On a phone the user can watch temperature and water, set a feeding plan, and change the colour of the light. “It suits a beginner, and a family.”
The smart tank does not only meet a want. It wakes the rest of the chain. Chen Fang, of Fangfang Anubias in Guangzhou, finds that many customers buy the tank first, and only then want plants, a landscape, and a fish, which pulls sand, stone, and the rest of the trade along. Lin Shaoyuan sees the next step as a service that does the whole job. “One piece of equipment is not enough. A system is what younger buyers will take.” A smart tank plus a landscape that goes in quickly, so a beginner can have a good-looking tank without the apprenticeship, may be the next opening.
Netlea, Yifang, and firms like them are rebuilding the chain from what the market asks, and they are out in front of the new current. In the city’s specialty agriculture, ornamental fish grew 34.5 percent in output value over the first three quarters. The feeling a city person buys is turning into a real increase, and it is a strong push behind a higher quality of growth.
Under that upgrade — meeting the demand closely, and changing the strategy when it is time — lie several decades of the Guangzhou trade.
“Xilang in Guangzhou is where the industry began.” Lin is sure of it. Farming started there in 1969. In 1979 the Ministry of Foreign Trade named it an export base. The chain was already deep. In Liwan and around it, more than 500 factories make tanks, lights, and pumps. The ecology runs from breeding plants and fry to making the equipment and selling on a livestream.
On that ground Guangzhou is working on several sides at once: technique and channels, a firmer base, a market that connects, and a brand that can be told.
On the technical side, three banks of germplasm — freshwater fish, tropical fish, and ornamental plants — now breed more than 200 small ornamental fish at home, and the industry is moving toward smaller fish and finer ones. The Guangzhou Academy of Agricultural and Rural Sciences, the only institute in the country that studies aquatic plants in a systematic way, has bred five new plants, including jade anubias, and produces them at scale. A plant that once cost tens of yuan is now three to five, and the cost of a landscape for a younger buyer has come down sharply. On the channel side, the city has gone online with Douyin and others in a plan for an ornamental-fish belt of interested sellers. More than 60 aquarium shops online now sell over a million yuan a year. Offline, events such as Guangzhou Ornamental Fish into Ten Thousand Homes bring a name that already travels the world closer to a younger daily life.
From one small fish in Xilang to a smart landscape on a desk; from a niche for people who already knew the hobby to a new carrier of feeling for younger buyers: the industry’s revisions answer the new wave of spending with some precision. As the germplasm banks take shape, and as smart technique and the look of a landscape grow into each other, what Guangzhou makes will keep leading the easy-tank era. More young people will be eased by a tank the size of a hand, and the story of Guangzhou’s fish will keep being told in that generation.
